Lyme Museum: Past, Present - and Future?

Like many museums, Lyme Regis has been through good times and bad, as David Tucker explains in this talk. From its unsteady start in 1902, rapid growth in the 1930s and subsequent post-war decline, its low point was the collapse of the east wing in the 1960s. However, under the guidance of John Fowles and Liz-Ann Bawden the Museum recovered. Mary Godwin was then appointed as the first professional Director, under whom further significant improvements were made.

In 2012 David initiated a second successful Lottery Fund bid, and as a consequence the new Mary Anning Wing is expected to open in June 2017, when the main museum doors re-open.

Doors open at 2pm. Entry at the door for non-members £5 (students £2). Tea and cake provided.

Sherborne Evidence for the History of England in the Reigns of Kings Ethelred and Canute

Our annual Jim Gibb Memorial Lecture is this year given by Dr. Ken Lawson.

The history of England around the year 1000 saw some of the most intense fighting in its history, culminating in the Viking conquest of 1016 and the accession of a Danish King Cnut (Canute), a figure of European stature. Evidence from Sherborne plays a critical role in our understanding of this period – both regarding those high levels of taxation (the Danegeld) and the well-known story about Cnut's attempt to turn back the tide, which Dr Lawson argues indicates his shrewd grasp of the political world in which he operated. King Cnut and Queen Emma came to worship in Sherborne Abbey and finding the roof leaking badly the Queen gave 20 pounds of silver for its repair. Further evidence of this is revealed by an examination of contemporary Sherborne land charters; years when Sherborne history is also national history.

Doors open at 2pm. Entry at the door £5 (students £2). Tea and cake provided.

Sonia Sabri Company - Salaam

Salaam, meaning ‘peace’, is Sonia Sabri Company’s latest stunning creation, devised in response to the unrest around the world and aiming to refocus and reminisce on all that is good. This double-bill programme cleverly weaves a dialogue between live music and Kathak dance, celebrating the simple bliss of being alive. With the world-renowned Tabla maestro Sarvar Sabri performing outstanding compositions of rhythm, and accompaniment on powerful vocals by the talented Shoma Dey on the harmonium, the performance is fuelled with a vibrating a resonance. Internationally acclaimed for her electric stage presence, dancer Sonia revisits the roots of Kathak in a remarkable performance, which embraces a rich, joyful spirit and builds to a heartpounding rhythmic crescendo. Poignant metaphorical narratives combined with Sonia’s command of intricate footwork, eloquent gesture and rapid spins takes audiences on a powerful journey. Sonia Sabri Company is one of Britain’s leading South Asian Dance and Music companies, exciting the national and international dance scene by presenting Kathak dance in new spaces and contexts, and to new audiences, developing a distinctive, contemporary style which speaks to the here and now. This outstanding production tours Dorset through Artsreach, the counties arts charity.

Pipeline Theatre - Spillikin

It’s the '70s. Sally likes Debbie Harry, Raymond likes making robots; they’re an unlikely pair. Flash forward to 2030. After a long, childless and sometimes bumpy marriage, Sally has Alzheimers. Before Raymond died he created a robot, uploaded with his memories, to keep her company. It’s the ultimate love letter from beyond the grave: an endlessly patient memory-jogger and singing partner, it gives order to her confusion, and becomes a new partner in the oddest of odd-couple romances. But as Sally’s mind fades, will the robot be more of a comfort or a threat?  Spillikin will make you laugh, cry, and ponder big questions of love, death, and technology. Prepare to have your heart broken by this 5* sell-out Edinburgh show from Pipeline Theatre featuring a state-of-the-art robot as a full cast member. After the show there will be a Q&A session with a chance to meet the company, and to get up close and personal with the robot, who can even answer your questions himself. This outstanding production tours Dorset through Artsreach, the counties arts charity. Suitable 12+
