Wed 10 MarchSherborne Flicks - Amelia

Showing at the Digby Church Hall, Digby Road (opposite the Abbey), Sherborne on the second Wednesday of the month. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 performance. Tickets £5 in advancefrom Sherborne Tourist Information Centre (01935 815341)or on the door.

Amelia Earhart, the great pioneer aviatrix, has been impersonated on screen by numerous actresses, but never as convincingly as she is by Hilary Swank in this immensely enjoyably biopic from the Indian director who made her name with Salaam Bombay!. With the right short haircut, some orthodontic effects and sporting her regular radiant smile, Swank bears an uncanny resemblance to Earhart.
The film chronicles her early fascination with flight, her companionate marriage to publisher and publicist George Putnam (Richard Gere at his most charming), her two record-breaking transatlantic flights, her rise to national status as heroine of the Depression ("the Lady Lindy"), feminist icon and crusader for commercial air transport and, none too interestingly, her affair with President Roosevelt's aeronautical administrator, Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor), father of the better-known Gore.
The movie conveys an exhilarating sense of the heady days of early aviation, is beautifully photographed by New Zealand cinematographer Stuart Dryburgh, and doesn't make the mistake of getting involved with the various theories (many of them absurd) surrounding the disappearance in the Pacific of Earhart and Noonan.

Sherborne Area Action Plan

You are invited to participate in a public consultation  the draft version of the new Sherborne Area Action Plan 2010-2013.  West Dorset Partnership will be consulting on the new West Dorset Community Plan at the same event
(see http://www.dorsetforyou.com/index.jsp?articleid=1832)

See http://www.sherbornetown.com/sites/SherborneAreaPartnership/1010.aspx to read and/or download the Sherborne Area Action Plan 2010-2013 as it currently stands.

We are hoping that WDDC will be able to produce a giant A1 version to enable those attending to suggest amendments which will then be easily readable by everyone present. The new Plan is a substantially amended version of the 2006-2009 Area Action Plan.  Many of the old Actions have been completed and therefore been deleted while others have been revised to reflect changing circumstances.   A number are entirely new.  This process has been carried out by the Forums who will also take responsibility for taking the lead in implementing many of them.

We would be delighted if you are able to join us.  You are very welcome to forward this email on to anyone who you think might be interested.  Please let me know if you have any queries.  If you are unable to attend but would like to comment on the Action Plan, please send your comments to me.

Play - ‘A Ghost on Tiptoe’,

A comedy co-authored by Robert Morley and Rosemary Anne Sisson, is the spring production of Amateur Players of Sherborne. The play will be performed by the Players at 7.30pm in the Digby Hall, Sherborne.
Set in present day Fulham, Cuthbert Barnstable learns he has only 18 months to live. At first he only tells his friend Henry. However, he cannot resist the temptation of telling his family and is constantly disappointed by their reactions. During the course of the play he discovers what life is really all about and his family learns what it is to live with a man determined to live out all his unfulfilled ambitions. But the play, like life, is a comedy with all its twists and turns.
Tickets priced at £7 (Students £5) are available from Marsh's, Cheap Street, Sherborne.

Sherborne Flicks - Bright Star

Showing at the Digby Church Hall, Digby Road (opposite the Abbey), Sherborne on the second Wednesday of the month. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 performance. Tickets £5 in advancefrom Sherborne Tourist Information Centre (01935 815341)or on the door.

Jane Campion's Bright Star is in a different class and this is partly because it looks at John Keats from the viewpoint of Fanny Brawne, in the same way that Percy Adlon's remarkable Céleste looked at Proust through the eyes of his dedicated housekeeper.
The three-year relationship between Brawne (Abbie Cornish) and Keats (Ben Whishaw) – she was 18 when they met in 1818, he was 23 – is one of the great love affairs of English literature, but it didn't become public knowledge until a decade after her death in 1865 when some of his letters to her were published. At the heart of the film is a doomed love affair that moves gently, inexorably towards death through the seasons that the poet observes, and one thinks of The Eve of St Agnes, the great narrative poem Keats wrote in this period, which comes across like a scenario for a wonderful silent movie. Both Cornish and Whishaw inhabit their roles immaculately and there are magnificent moments when the emotions on the screen are complemented in the verse spoken, most especially perhaps when the pair recite alternate couplets from "La Belle Dame sans Merci".
