Summer baskets 2011
SIB Summer Hanging baskets Order Form 2011.pdf
Sherborne in Bloom 2010
Sherborne Town Council has taken over the administration of the summer and winter
hanging baskets. Most businesses that usually hire a basket will have heard from
the Town Council by now.
We hope that the baskets will be beautiful and abundant. Please support the
considerable efforts of SherSborne in Bloom, enhancing the quality of life in our
wonderful town.
Next year we hope to sponsor a youth-orientated award as a part of Sherborne in Bloom. Later this year Sherborne Chamber of Trade, in association with Sherborne Town Council, hope to repeat the success of their Spring Baskets, trialled in 2008/9.
After a request by Sherborne in Bloom organisers, traders spent time and effort decorating their windows with flowers and in some cases birthday greetings on SIB judging day. A number of traders in the town organised their own baskets and floral displays, making a wonderful job of it. In some cases, awards were won in recognition of their work. Some members helped with last minute weeding and tidying in preparation for Sherborne in Bloom. Some traders sponsored roundabouts and other floral dislays enjoyed by all traders, residents and visitors.
Sherborne in Bloom 2010 Update
What a fantastic turnout for Sherborne in Bloom this year. The competition had an amazingly high number of entries, which was wonderful.
Caroline Rowland, Organiser said “It was a mammoth, but worthwhile task! Organising the judging took a long time, and culminated in a whole week of judging visits. On some days there was more than one team of judges going out to judge — all day!”
“During the judging week, judges looked at more than 80 front and back gardens, 143 allotments, 90 homes in the Quarr Lane Park and 120 businesses, pubs and restaurants. Those who entered the competition told us how pleased they were to show the judges around.”
A number of the entries were truly outstanding. It was really tough in every category to decide which gardens and displays were most worthy of awards.
In the categories of Best Pub and Restaurant Floral Display, Best Shop Frontage and Most Striking Town Centre Frontage Cordelia McFarlane, Sally Westlotorn and Head Judge Louise Burks had the difficult job of judging.
The Green Restaurant took the Best Pub and Restaurant Floral Display, with The George Pub and The Three Wishes being highly commended.
Margaret Balfour Beauty Salon in Swan Yard took the award for the best shop frontage. The Most Striking Town Centre Frontage was awarded to Sherborne Police Station. The work that had been going on here was most impressive. A tremendous effort by all the staff had paid off to make a sensory garden, which featured an original Police Vegetable Cart filled with growing edible plants. The Almshouses were also highly commended.
On Tuesday 13 July, after a tour of the town, where Sherborne Chamber of Trade was represented by President Thelma Drabik, awards were proudly presented to the winners at a presentation ceremony at the Butterfly House, Castle Gardens. Final results of the overall competition are due in September, after the AGM of South West in Bloom, which is being held in Bath this year. Sherborne have high hopes of being awarded gold again, and hope that the town can be taken forward to Britain in Bloom next year.
Chamber Coordinator Cordelia McFarlane said “Sherborne has again demonstrated its strong community spirit right across all age groups, and has raised the perception of Sherborne to outsiders as an attractive and lively place”.
