Sun 16 JuneThe Sherborne Independent Market

A new market is coming to town in Sherborne, Dorset this midsummer. Taking place on Sunday 16 June, the Sherborne Independent Market will be based along the lines of the hugely popular Frome Market. It aims to provide the first curated, “destination” market for Sherborne with an eclectic mix of artisan stalls running down Cheap Street, a profusion of Sherborne “Indies” in Digby Road and the introduction of the highly acclaimed Eco Pop Up supermarket staged in the Digby Hall, Hound Street.

Particularly interesting for small micro or start-up traders will be the offer of stalls for just £5 giving an opportunity for these businesses to showcase a variety of different offerings whether this be homemade jam, pickles and chutneys; home-grown vegetables fresh from the allotment; tasty cakes and pastries or hand-crafted jewellery; vintage clothing or wood-turned bowls and pots.

It will also be the first time residents and visitors to Sherborne will have had the chance to sample the Sherborne version of the pop up Eco Supermarket which already runs at Odcombe, just outside Yeovil, on the first Saturday of every month. Claire Ashton and Gaynor Soulsby are delighted to bring The Pop-Up Eco Supermarket to Sherborne.

Based in Digby Hall, The Pop-Up provides all the convenience of a supermarket shop - bakery, dairy, fruit and vegetables, store cupboard, washing and laundry products, personal care, pet care, baby care, fresh flowers, eco sustainables, hemp clothing, stationery, gifts and of course local cider!

A recycling area will take care of items not taken at the kerbside, so people are encouraged to bring beauty and dental packaging, bottle lids, pump and trigger sprays, biscuit and crisps wrappers, batteries and lightbulbs. There will also be an area featuring local repair experts and a cafe alongside.

Claire Ashton says, “Eco shopping is an experience – be a part of the Eco Community and work out what suits your family and budget. Many switches are cheaper than traditional purchases, and by buying non-packaged food you only buy what you need, so you save money and reduce waste. Remember to bring your own bags, containers, jars and bottles to stock up.

The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)

Performances will also be held during the previous week, Thur 20th -Sat 22th June.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a one and a half hour romp through, you guessed it, the complete works of The Bard. Some of his work, it has to be said, gets only a brief mention, but the rest is treated with an unsurpassed irreverence bordering on the insane. Featured works include a gory Titus Andronicus, a somewhat less than romantic Romeo and Juliet, the Othello rap and Hamlet performed in less than a minute. If you like Shakespeare you will like this. If you hate Shakespeare, you'll love it!

Tickets will be available online from 28th May2019.

Yetminster Fair Day

The Yetminster Fair is one of the oldest fairs in Wessex and has been running almost continuously since the 13th Century under a charter granted to the Bishop of Salisbury for a fair “to be held in his manor of Yetminster”.

The lively atmosphere of Fair Day in the village calendar adds to the charm of the old stone farm houses and manors evoking memories of a bygone age and attracts people from far and wide.

It is normally held on the 2nd Saturday of July and there are a myriad of stalls along the High Street with great entertainment for all ages in the main arena outside the White Hart.

This years fair has everything from local Morris Dancers, Irish Dancers, Steel bands and a Ukulele band to many stalls, plays, poetry, circus workshops, exhibitions, food and drink - ending in live music in the pub at 8.30pm - 10.30pm

Opera in Oborne - La Boheme

La Boheme - Performances  on Friday 2nd 2019

The most famous opera of them all, Puccini's La Boheme.  Everyone loves La Boheme! Whether it’s the fantastic music, the tears of joy and heartbreak for Rodolfo and Mimi, or the sheer style of bohemian Paris in La Belle Époque, everyone adores this most romantic of operas. If this is your first visit or your hundredth, La Boheme’s emotional charge is irresistible - and you certainly need those tissues!”

Opera in Oborne - Il segreto di Susanna.

Il segreto di Susanna.

What is Susanna hiding? Her husband’s suspicions are driving him wild. Will it destroy their marriage?  All is revealed in this hilarious 50 minutes of sparkling comic-opera at its tuneful best by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari.  “Il Segreto”, with its contemporary plot and catchy tunes, is a great example of why he was one of the most performed opera composers of the 1900’s.

Opera in Oborne - The Gala Concert

The Gala Concert.

How Opera in Oborne started, the ever-popular gala concert.  Previous years have included favourites such as the Toreador Song, La donna e mobile and Maria from West Side Story alongside some lesser known, but beautiful arias.  The perfect way to introduce opera to a wider audience.

Opera Holloway: La Boheme

In a seaside town on the south coast in England, four young men are living the youthful dream, yearning for love and not working too hard. Their flat is run down, they're content to live on take-aways, they complain when they run out of money and have perfected the art of dodging the landlord. Their lives are filled with trips to the pub, late night dancing and girls. Until Mimi knocks on the door. Rodolfo opens it, eyes and hands meet and a passionate affair begins. Follow the impoverished lovers as their relationship unfurls, from it’s joyous beginnings to the bitter end on a chilly promenade. This contemporary new production of Puccini’s thrilling, passionate love story captures the raw, consuming power of young love, performed in Opera Holloway's intimate and immediate style. Touring Dorset with Artsreach, the counties touring arts charity.
