Sat 02 June - Fri 31 AugustHauser & Wirth - Art Exhibition by Alexander Calder (1898 - 1976)

Calder was one of the most influential and pioneering artists of the twentieth century, transforming the very nature of sculpture by introducing the fourth dimension and the actuality of real-time experience into his work. Known primarily for his invention of the mobile, Calder created a prolific oeuvre that extended to wire sculpture, carved figures, stabiles, standing mobiles, oil paintings, works on paper, jewellery, furniture and domestic objects, and monumental public commissions across the globe.

The exhibition 'From the Stony River to the Sky' runs through all five gallery spaces at Hauser & Wirth Somerset with over 80 pieces, including large-scale outdoor works set within the gardens at Durslade Farm. The exhibition takes its title from the etymology of the surname Calder in Celtic-meaning 'from the stony river'-and its inspiration from Calder's long-time home and studio in Roxbury, Connecticut. Purchasing the dilapidated farmhouse in 1933, Calder and his wife Louisa adapted it to fit their growing
family, and Calder built three studios over the years to accommodate his burgeoning ambitions as an artist.

Miracle Theatre: The Cherry Orchard

A once-wealthy family faces ruin as society teeters on the brink of cataclysmic change...

This summer, Miracle Theatre unpacks Chekhov's bittersweet comedy about a once-wealthy family, whose idleness and extravagance have brought them to the brink of bankruptcy. Obstinate and self-absorbed, they are deaf to the rumblings of change which surrounds them, and unable to accept help when they need it. Will it take a revolution to destroy their cosy world of privilege and entitlement, or will their own stupidity be enough?

Bill Scott's new adaptation treads the tragicomic tightrope, bringing out all the humour and pathos of Chekhov's masterpiece which, more than a century after it was written is as popular as ever.

Cornwall's award winning Miracle Theatre has developed a strong reputation for producing entertaining and dynamic adaptations of classic plays. Go and see for yourself this summer! Recommended 7+

Please note that this is an open air performance. Bring a cushion or rug to sit on, pack a picnic and wear warm/weatherproof clothing. Guide dogs only please. Running time: 2 hours

From Exe to Axe

This is the culmination of the world premiere of "From Exe to Axe" by West Country playwright Steve Andrews. The six-show run starts at Raleigh's birthplace in East Devon and ends in Sherborne- Raleigh's home for many years.  It traces Raleigh's life from Devonshire upstart through the glory years as Queen's favourite and intrrepid explorer to his final doomed expedition. This is the tale of a flawed hero set against the intrigues and splendour of the Elizabethan court.
