Sun 04 NovemberCold War Car For Auction

A rare Tatra Czechoslovakian car, from 1950, has emerged from the cold and is entered into the Charterhouse auction of classic and vintage cars.

To read the full article please click on the attached PDF.

Two classic cars entered to the auction have rather unusually not seen a drop of rain on their bodywork for decades.  The 1960 Fairthorpe is easy to see it has not seen a drop of rain in years as it is covered under decades of dust and is stored in a barn, the other is a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL which its meticulous owner bought in 1997 and has not been in the rain since then.”

Society, Service & Sacrifice: Sherborne Remembers the First World War

The unveiling of Sherborne War memorial in November 1921

‘We will remember them’ - but remember whom? How can we remember men of a ‘lost generation’ whom we have never met?

This evening commemoration, led by Sherborne Museum, seeks to give a context to the lives and deaths of the 175 men listed on the town’s First World War memorial. Our speakers will also assess the impact of wartime conditions on Sherborne society and explore how the war continued to affect lives after the signing of the armistice on 11th November 1918. Through illustrated talks and readings, we will bring to mind the immense debt of gratitude we owe to some 850 Sherbornians who served for King and Country. Contributions will be made by the descendants of some of these men and women, and also by students from local schools.

Tickets: £8, on sale at Sherborne Tourist Information Centre from Saturday 6th October. Under 18s free of charge. Doors open from 6.30pm, with a glass of wine included in the ticket price.
