Latin American Music Festival

The Sixth edition of the Latin American Music Festival in Sherborne will offer 2 exciting events this year!

First event will be a Jazz workshop on Friday 17th November. The event will be directed by Cuban pianist Milly Riquelme and it will run from 2pm to 4pm.

Cost of the workshop: £20

it includes the workshop, tea/coffee & biscuits break and free access to the second concert of the festival.

Second event will be a concert featuring our local orchestra Wessex Strings performing a wide variety of music by Holst, Finzi, Haydn and Venezuelan joropo and argentinean tango!! NOT TO BE MISSED!

Friday night we have a recital None but the Lonely Heart performed by the stunning Latvian baritone Pauls Putnins accompanied by Diana Ketler, Professor of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

A recital of Russian songs of love, romance, heartbreak and dances with death. Including some Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Borodin and Sviridov.

Saturday night is a different affair Songs of the Great War.

There will be vintage treasures, singalongs and surprises, art songs and popular songs that never went away. All beautifully sung by this remarkable singer – who will also entertain us with her stories and fantastic knowledge of music from the era.

Performed by internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Patricia Hammond. Accompanied by Matt Redman, who plays a host of instruments from piano to banjo to slide guitar.

Songs of the Edwardian Age and the Great War

Performed by internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Patricia Hammond.

Yeovil Chamber Choir Concert

Yeovil Chamber Choir will be performing a concert entitled “Light Out of Darkness: German and English music to celebrate the Reformation”.  Two of the featured composers will be Hieronymus Praetorius and Orlando Gibbons.

The concert will be directed by our Musical Director, Peter Parshall.  Peter Lea-Cox is Guest Organist for the evening and will accompany the choir as well as play two solo pieces.

Sherborne Hand-made Craft Fair

The Hand-Made Craft Market, organized by Gilli Salmons, is returning, for the third  time this year,  to the Digby Hall (next to the Library) Hound Street, Sherborne, on Saturday, 9th Decem ber 2017, 10.30 am – 3.30pm.  A good chance to get those early Christmas presents!

These traders only sell hand-made goods, made by themselves. 

The range is very wide and includes Embroidered gifts and Contemporary textiles, together with Beadcraft, Chainmaille Jewellery, Children's Clothes, Crocheted Sculptures, Felted Bags and Hats, Fishing Flies, Fused Glass, Gemstone and Silver Jewellery, Household Textiles (tea cosies/oven gloves), Keyrings and Wine glass charms, Needle-felted pictures, Wood turned gifts,  and Wooden keepsake pictures and plaques.

Christmas Concert Under Concorde

Join the HMS Heron Volunteer Band for the hugely popular annual Christmas Concerts Under Concorde. The concert features several classics and some festive numbers for the occasion.

By popular demand the event will be split over two evenings on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th of December 2017 - 7.30pm start.

T E Lawrence: his life & friends in Dorset

Blackmore Vale and Yeovil NT Association presents a talk by Susan Vincent (Member of the Lawrence Society).

Susan's talk will cover the time T E Lawrence spent in Dorset from 1923 to his death in 1935. She will focus on his time as Private Shaw at the Army Barracks in Bovington, why he bought Clouds Hill nearby and who he had as visitors there, and his closest friends in Dorset, who included Thomas Hardy and his wife.

The Remarkable Trees at Stourhead

Blackmore Vale and Yeovil NT Association will hold its AGM @ 2.30pm at the Digby Hall, Hound Street, Sherborne.  After tea and cake there will be a talk by Emily Utgren (NT Stourhead).

Tree care is core to a lot of the work at Stourhead, ensuring that there are young trees preparing to be magnificent one day. They are currently re-visiting the past to explain why Stourhead was built and how it was conserved since the 1700 to make the estate we see today.

Sherborne Castle Country Fair

Sherborne Castle Country Fair is a one-day rural event held in the grounds of Sherborne Castle. 

This family day-out is held to raise funds for local children’s charities and youth organisations.  It is a traditional country fair with displays and attractions, trade and craft stands and a rare and native breed animal show.  The 2018 date is Bank Holiday Monday 28th May.

Tickets on the day cost: adult £12.50, children (5-16) £4.00, family* £30.00.  Under 5's free.  *Admits 2 adults and 3 fee-paying children.

Oak Fair

The Oak Fair will once again be held on the August bank holiday weekend.  For anyone who hasn't visited before, this is a special event for those interested in woodcraft, timber, conservation and the countryside.  There is something that will appeal to all members of the family including over 200 exhibitors, events in our arenas including The Heavy Horse Logger team who compete a number of challenges over the weekend, Mere Down Falconry who bring a variety of birds of prey that put on amazing displays and Have A Go Archery which is available to everyone to try!  

We also have tree climbing and zip wires for the younger visitors to experience and  Avalon Axes who demostrate axe throwing as well as letting all our visitors have a go!  Market Square will be buzzing with local food and drink producers with the Childrens Area situated nearby that will have a range of workshops for all family members to take part in and scarecrow making!

There will also be performances in St Barnabas church over the weekend, Saturday will see Bagatelle returning to perform two short concerts and on Sunday the William Barnes Society.
