Tindall Recital Series:Roderick Williams

As part of Sherborne School's Tindall Recital Series we are thrilled to welcome operatic star Roderick Williams to perform in our Big School Room.

Roderick Williams sings a wide repertoire, from baroque to contemporary music, in the opera house, on the concert platform, and in recital. He won the Singer of the Year Award in the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards, and was awarded the OBE for services to music in June 2017. He has also recently been nominated for the Olivier Awards.

The programme presents a recital of English Song with pianist Susie Allan and includes favourites by Vaughan Williams, Finzi, Ireland and Butterworth.

This is an occasion not to be missed. Roderick will have been performing at the Barbican on Friday 13th April with the BBC Symphony Orchestra—his appearance in Sherborne is an exciting one-off and a rare treat indeed.

Tickets cost £10 and are available from tickets@sherborne.org or 01935 812249.

Hospital Blues: Nursing in Sherborne during the First World War

Illustrated talk in aid of the Friends of Holnest Church.

Local historian, Luke Mouland, explores the pivotal role played by Sherborne and the surrounding villages in nursing wounded servicemen during the First World War; a contribution which was largely sustained through the efforts of female voluntary labour. The town was not only the first in Dorset to register a Voluntary Aid Detachment but also pioneered the use of open-air treatment for victims suffering from gas poisoning and septic wounds. Sherborne's important contribution in this regard will be brought to life through the artefacts, photographs and personal stories cared for at Sherborne Museum.

Talk begins at 7.30pm but doors open from 7pm. Tickets cost £8 to include a two-course supper (bring your own drink and glasses). Please reserve your seat(s) in advance by contacting Graham on 01963 210632 or Luke on 07760 261056.

The Inaugural Tim Edwards Memorial Cricket Day

Tim Edwards was a colourful and gregarious character who died far too soon, a year ago on 24th May 2017. Tim was a passionate man who loved his family, his work (distilling and promoting Somerset Cider Brandy) and cricket.  Tim’s love for cricket, fun and sociability provided the answer - hence today's Memorial Cricket Day is taking place.

The day will start at 12.00 midday, there will be a Bar (with Somerset Cider of course!), a BBQ , Cream Teas and a Raflle with monies raised being donated to the Friends of the Yeatman Hospital Charity. For your entertainment there will be multiple teams playing limited overs cricket and there will be the opportunity for anybody who wishes, to take part in a Kwick Cricket game. For those who have not played Kwick Cricket, it is a high speed version of cricket aimed at encouraging all to take part (whether you have played cricket or not), played with a softer ball with everyone having the chance to bat and bowl – it is great fun!

Whether you knew Tim or simply share his love for cricket –  we hope that you will come to share his day, you will be very welcome - we think Tim would approve.

Classic and Supercars at Sherborne Castle

This event be in its 15th year and can be regarded as one of the premier classic and supercar shows in the South of England.  With upwards of 2,000 cars on display, from veterans to the latest supercars.  Last year over 13,500 people attended and in the last 4 years the show has raised in excess of £130,000 for national and local charities.

The Marque feature for 2018 is Land Rover - 70 Years 1948-2018, there will also be parades and tour arrivals, together with special displays to showcase dragsters and race cars, supercars, hot rods and custom cars.  There is a host of other attractions, suitable for the whole family, including motor club stands, motor trade stands, autojumble, craft fair, a large catering village, simulators, little Landies and a quality classic car auction.

The venue could not be better as Sherborne Castle, built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594, sits beside a 50 acre lake and in 30 acres of gardens designed by Capability Brown, and forms a dramatic backdrop to this immensely impressive show.

If  you’ve never been to a classic car show before, or you are a complete petrolhead, Classic & Supercars will have something exciting for you to see.
