The Long Weekend: Life in the English Country House between the Wars

An illustrated talk in aid of the Friends of Holnest Church.

Patron of the Friends, Adrian Tinniswood OBE, will uncover the truth about a world half-forgotten, draped in myth and hidden behind stiff upper lips and film-star smiles. Drawing on the eye-witness testimonies of belted earls, unhappy heiresses and bullying butlers, he gives a voice to the people who inhabited the world of the English country house, both above and below stairs.

Adrian is the author of fourteen books on social and architectural history. His most recent being, "The Long Weekend", was a Sunday Times bestseller, a New York Times bestseller and a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year.

Doors open 7.15pm. Tickets cost £5 from Sherborne TIC.

John Slade of Sherborne, maltster and bankrupt: a tale of financial ruin in early nineteenth century

Robert Nantes, Postgraduate Reasearcher at the University of Exeter, joins us to present this year's Gerald Pitman Memorial Lecture.

In the late 1820s, John Slade borrowed heavily in order to set up as a maltster and brewer in Sherborne. In the few years he traded something was to go very wrong, and he began to be pursued for debt. The situation became so bad that he fled Sherborne at Easter in 1830....and was never heard of again.

Discover fresh insights into this darker aspect of Sherbornian life.

Blackmore Vale and Yeovil NT Association presents a talk by Pam White (NT Corfe Castle).
A translation from the Latin of the Exchequers Accounts of Edward I has given us quite detailed information about the castle build from 1280 - 94. This, together with the access afforded by the recent conservation work, has fuelled our curiosity about both the castle build and subsequent 'home improvements'.  It's an exciting time to be involved with such an iconic building.

Mata Hari: Female Spy

The Great War: while millions of men struggle and fight in the mud and hell of the trenches, one woman’s story begs to be told. Mata Hari, the most notorious female spy in history. Or was she?
100 years after her execution and inspired by her own words, this is her story. Performer Katharine Mary gives a powerful portrayal of a compelling woman, the world's first femme fatale! Dancer, lover, confidante and courtesan; from her upbringing in The Netherlands, to Indonesia, and the invention in Paris of her alter-ego, she reflects upon the events that have led her to the firing squad.

This brilliant new theatre show arrives in Dorset through Artsreach, the counties touring arts charity.
