Summary: 'A Malicious and mischievous Castle' Built on a grand scale in the 12th century by Roger De Caen, Bishop of Salisbury, Sherborne was coveted by bishops and rival noblemen alike and had a long and chequered history. In 1592, Elizabeth I gave it to Sir Walter Raleigh who carried out substantial alterations, but by 1594 had built his country home, Sherborne Lodge, in the grounds. Sherborne Lodge is now known as Sherborne Castle. April to Oct (incl) daily from 10am.
